Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2, the sequel to Dir. Johnnie To’s hit movie Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 1, has finally set its premiere date on November 11, also known as Single’s Day. I think it’s very apt that they will release that movie on that day since its Chinese title translates to Single Men and Women. This movie is about five people, whose love lives are so entangled and so enmeshed with one another that it’s hard to discern which is which or what is what, creating an unprecedented pandemonium that can only happen in a movie.
The movie revolves around the playboy Shen Ran played by Louis Koo. In the first movie, he loses the girl of his dreams, Zixin, played by Gao Yuan Yuan, to Qi Hong, played by Daniel Wu, because he can’t seemed to keep his pants zipped up. In the sequel, he is again back to his philandering ways. That is, until he meets Yang Yang, played by Mirriam Yeung, and for the first time, he actually thinks that it’s for real and he can finally let go of his carefree ways and settle down for good. However, to complicate things further, Paul, played by Vic Chou, and described in the movie as a total romantic, also fell for Yang Yang. On the other hand, Yang Yang mistakes Paul as Zixin’s fiance when she sees the two of them together at a bridal couture shop, which leads her to think that he’s just playing her, therefore resisting all his advances on her. Unbeknownst to her, he is actually Zixin’s younger brother who came all the way from France to attend her wedding to Qi Hong. Can you still follow? If yes, then good. If not….. moving along….. To further confuse the viewing audience, Shen Ran again meets Zixin when she applies for a job at Yang Yang’s company. He realizes that he’s still in love with her and decides to do just about every crazy thing in order to stop the wedding and win her back. Meanwhile, Paul proposes marriage to Yang Yang who is now torn between him and Shen Ran. So, who’s going to end up with who in the end? Will there even be a wedding in the movie? We’ll just have to watch the movie to find out.
I’m actually excited to watch this movie because it’s going to star my favorite actor Vic Chou. I’m also curious to see how Director To will be able to rotate the movie’s plot around the five main characters. I just don’t think there will be a secondary lead as all five artists are big names in the industry and each of their character plays a vital part in the movie. I haven’t watched the first movie yet, and I think that this would be the best time for me to watch it.
Here are some stills from the movie, and also featuring the five main characters.
I think the movie poster is quite symbolic. It shows the characters as individuals, without giving away what their relationships are with one another.
Here’s the movie trailer.
I will definitely write a review of this movie after I’ve watched it. I just hope it won’t disappoint me as I have already high expectations from it.
